Valuing People Now?

Continuing the support for adults with a learning disability

7th December 2011, London

Latest News :

The history of people with learning disabilities has been punctuated by scandal.

In recent years the aspirations contained in Valuing People Now – together with the ascent of personal budgets - have resulted in adults with learning disabilities being given the chance to have more choice and control to lead more fulfilling lives.

However, the current challenge for local authorities is how to continue the progress made in recent years at a time of budgetary constraint and raised eligibility thresholds - and to do so within the law.

This has never been more true than at a time when we are hearing reports that one in 10 councils social care budgets may be illegal and that legal claims on council social care policies are up by 45% . (www.communitycare.co.uk 31 August 2011).

Taking forward the aspirations of Valuing People Now has never been more important for those clients who do not meet local authority thresholds , in order to avoid 'drift' and an escalation of need.

Is your local authority doing all it can to support and safeguard adults with a learning disability to avoid history repeating itself?
